Celebrating Being Extra
Celebrating Being Extra
“Extra” is a slang term often associated with negative connotations. The top definition on Urban Dictionary puts it as “over the top; excessive, dramatic behavior; way too much.” The second most-popular definition? Even more succinct: “Doing the absolute *#+! # most. For no reason.”
I am inspired by some influencers and writers who have embraced the positive aspects of turning up your extra. A writer on Medium last year simplified the term to three principles: “authenticity,” “courage,” and “inspiration to find meaning:” “Being extra…” she wrote, “means being yourself. I think we call it extra because it is out of the norm to do so.”
I interpret that insight as leaning into your inner personal brand. Because at its core, a personal brand is simply an expression of your true self. As we enter the holiday season and start to look forward to a new year ahead, I’ve decided to turn my focus to my positive extra.
Through AI and other resources, I discovered several simple yet effective strategies to enhance your positivity.
Practice gratitude: Being thankful for experiences helps you appreciate your life and the world around you.
Stay hydrated and exercise: These habits improve your mood and energy levels, contributing to a positive mindset.
Seek out humor: Laughter can improve your mood and bring joy to those around you.
Immerse yourself in nature: Nature has a profound ability to refresh our minds and lift our spirits.
Use positive affirmations: These can help you focus on the good in life and find constructive ways to deal with difficulties.
Limit exposure to negative media: This can help reduce stress and boost overall happiness.
Reflect on your values: This can bring clarity, purpose, and emotional resilience.
Take breaks from digital distractions: This can help reduce stress and boost overall happiness.
These are all positive habits we can incorporate into our daily routines without a huge amount of effort. In a sense, we are training our minds to be more positive and enhance our overall well-being.
Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season. Here’s to celebrating being extra!
